Jewish Culture High School

Jewish Culture High School (JCHS) is a learning community dedicated to nurturing intellectual curiosity, personal growth, and purposeful action among young adults. Located in Fort Lauderdale and serving more than 150 students, JCHS embraces modern educational practices and forward-thinking technology to support both academic excellence and meaningful community engagement.

The Challenge

Across the United States, schools are placing stricter limits on student cell phone use in response to concerns about academic performance, attention spans, and student well-being. As these policies expand, many schools are discovering that enforcement is often the most difficult part.

For Jewish Culture High School, managing daily phone collection across more than 150 students proved far more complex. The school relied on phone cubby boxes where students deposited their devices each morning, but the manual system quickly became difficult to control and easy to manipulate.

In practice, several issues began to surface:
  • Phones were placed in incorrect slots, making them difficult to track.
  • Some students turned in non-functional “dummy phones” as placeholders while keeping their actual devices.
  • Staff members were required to memorize phone models and physical characteristics to match devices to individual students.
  • Taking attendance for large groups of 150+ students required significant time and manual oversight.

Over time, it became clear that the manual system was not sustainable. As enrollment grew, collecting phones became more time-consuming and harder to manage. JCHS needed a reliable way to confirm that students were turning in their phones without risking errors or deception.

Additionally, school leadership recognized an opportunity to improve how they tracked attendance for assemblies, events, and other large gatherings. Rather than addressing only phone collection, JCHS saw the potential to create an efficient way to manage student accountability across the school.

The Solution

To address their challenge, Jewish Culture High School partnered with Serialio to implement a system that made phone collection and attendance simple, secure, and efficient. Serialio introduced two advanced technologies:
  1. Mobile Credential Check-In: idChamp® RS4x Badge & Mobile Credential Reader: Using the idChamp RS4x, students tap the mobile credential stored in their Apple Wallet or Google Wallet at the time they submit their phone. With a simple tap, the device is instantly logged into the system, creating an immediate digital record of submission.
  2. RFID Badge Attendance: idChamp® NF2 NFC Badge Reader: Using the idChamp NF2 reader, students tap their school-issued RFID badge to check in to classes, assemblies, or scheduled events. With a quick scan, they are instantly checked-in and attendance is recorded and sent to the school’s FACTS student information system.
Together, these systems replaced the manual cubby-box process with a digital system that clearly records who has turned in their phone while also improving attendance tracking for assemblies, events, and other large gatherings. The solution was built to work with JCHS’s existing FACTS student database, which integrates with Cloud-in-Hand Stratus-io Time and Attendance, so staff did not have to change how they operate.

The Results

With Serialio’s system in place, Jewish Culture High School now has a clear and reliable way to manage both phone collection and student attendance throughout the school day.

Each phone submission is digitally recorded at the time of check-in, eliminating the uncertainty that previously allowed dummy devices and misplaced phones to go unnoticed. As a result, staff no longer have to rely on memorizing every student’s phone or risk mistakes during manual checks.

The use of scheduled sessions also expanded the system beyond phone collection. JCHS can now track attendance multiple times throughout the day, whether during class transitions, assemblies, or special events.

As one school representative shared:
“We can now electronically trace students who give their phone as opposed to blind faith, even keeping a trail for record purposes. We are able to efficiently validate phones within seconds, and sessions allow us to check in multiple times a day — something we weren’t able to do before.”
At a glance, JCHS now benefits from:
  • A clear digital record of which students have turned in their phones
  • Fast phone validation and check-in within seconds
  • No more dummy phones or manual memorization by staff
  • Multiple check-ins throughout the day using scheduled sessions or events
  • Accurate, real-time tracking of student attendance within each session
  • Student attendance data that automatically connects to the school’s FACTS system
